Make fall-apart tender, budget-friendly pulled pork using your slow cooker. This easy meal prep recipe is perfect for graduation parties or weeknight tacos.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lb boneless pork shoulder (pork butt)
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Combine the brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl to create the dry rub.
  2. Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels. Rub the spice mixture evenly over the entire surface of the pork.
  3. Place the seasoned pork shoulder in your slow cooker.
  4. Pour the chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce around the pork.
  5. Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or on high for 4 to 5 hours, until the meat is easily shredded with a fork. This is your key to fall-apart tender meat.
  6. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a large cutting board. Discard any excess fat.
  7. Shred the pork using two forks. Return the shredded meat to the slow cooker.
  8. Stir in about half of your favorite BBQ sauce to coat the meat. Let it sit on the warm setting for 15 minutes to absorb the flavor.
  9. Serve the crockpot pulled pork on buns for sliders or over rice for easy meal prep bowls. Offer extra BBQ sauce on the side.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, prepare the dry rub the day before and let the pork sit in the refrigerator overnight before cooking.
  • If you are making this for a graduation party, double the recipe and use two slow cookers.
  • This versatile base works great for tacos, sandwiches, or topping baked potatoes.
