Make this gourmet pizza featuring savory Italian sausage, creamy ricotta, sweet caramelized onions, and a final drizzle of honey. It is a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound pizza dough, store-bought or homemade
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 ounces Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded low-moisture mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons honey, for drizzling
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: Let your pizza dough rest at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before stretching. Preheat your oven and pizza stone (if using) to 475 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Caramelize the onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onion, salt, and pepper. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes until deep golden brown and soft. Set aside.
  3. Cook the sausage: In the same skillet, cook the Italian sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned through. Drain off any excess grease.
  4. Prepare the ricotta mixture: In a small bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and garlic powder.
  5. Assemble the pizza: Stretch or roll the dough into a 12 to 14-inch circle. Spread the ricotta mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Top with the cooked sausage and the caramelized onions.
  6. Bake the pizza: Carefully transfer the pizza to the preheated stone or baking sheet. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
  7. Finish and serve: Remove the pizza from the oven. Immediately drizzle the honey evenly over the top. Garnish with fresh basil leaves. Slice and serve hot.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, use hot Italian sausage instead of sweet or mild.
  • If you do not have a pizza stone, bake the pizza on a preheated baking sheet for a crispier bottom crust.
