Make this incredibly addictive Saltine Cracker Toffee, popularly known as Christmas Crack. This simple recipe combines salty crackers, buttery brown sugar toffee, and rich chocolate for a sweet and salty dessert that is perfect for holiday gifting or parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and place the saltine crackers in a single layer over the foil.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Let it boil for exactly one minute, then remove it from the heat immediately.
  3. Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, making sure to coat them completely.
  4. Bake the crackers with the toffee for 5 minutes. The toffee should be bubbly.
  5. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for 5 minutes to melt.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the crackers using an offset spatula. If desired, sprinkle with sea salt or crushed peppermint for extra flavor.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
  8. Break the hardened toffee into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
