You will love this comforting French Onion Chicken Bake. It captures the rich, savory flavor of French Onion Soup in a simple, cheesy, baked chicken dinner perfect for weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup French fried onions (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes until deeply caramelized and sweet. Stir in the thyme, salt, and pepper during the last minute.
  3. Remove the skillet from the heat. Place the chicken breasts evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish or keep them in the oven-safe skillet if using one.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Pour this mixture over and around the chicken.
  5. Bake the chicken for 20 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. Remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle the Gruyère and Swiss cheeses evenly over the chicken breasts. Top with the French fried onions.
  7. Return the dish to the oven and bake for another 5 to 7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden brown.
  8. Let the French Onion Chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve this hearty chicken dinner immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can sear the chicken breasts in the skillet for 2 minutes per side before adding the broth and baking.
  • If you do not have Gruyère, you can substitute it entirely with Provolone or Mozzarella for a different cheesy profile.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or egg noodles to soak up the savory pan juices.
