Ingredients
Scale
1 pound hot dogs (about 8 standard size)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 to 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for heat)
8 hot dog buns
Optional toppings: chopped green onions, sesame seeds
Instructions
Prepare the hot dogs: Score the hot dogs lightly with a knife if desired, or leave them whole.
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the hot dogs and cook, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the hot dogs and set them aside.
Make the firecracker sauce: In the same skillet, combine the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the brown sugar dissolves completely, about 2 minutes.
Return the cooked hot dogs to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low and cook, turning the hot dogs frequently to coat them completely in the glaze, for about 3 to 5 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly.
Warm the hot dog buns separately if desired.
Place one glazed hot dog in each bun. Drizzle any remaining sauce over the top.
Garnish with chopped green onions or sesame seeds before serving immediately.
Notes
For a milder flavor, start with 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. For extra heat, use a full teaspoon or add a dash of your favorite hot sauce to the glaze mixture.
You can easily double this recipe for a party. These are great party food hot dogs.
If you are grilling, cook the hot dogs on the grill first, then brush them generously with the prepared sauce during the last few minutes of cooking.
