Make these simple, cheesy pizza pinwheels using flaky puff pastry. They are a crowd-pleasing party finger food, quick appetizer recipe, and a fun kid friendly pizza snack perfect for lunchboxes or game day snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (14.1 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce or marinara sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup mini pepperoni slices
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Gently unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets onto a lightly floured surface. If the sheets are stuck together, separate them carefully.
  3. Brush the surface of each pastry sheet lightly with the beaten egg wash. This helps the layers stick together.
  4. Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the entire surface of each pastry sheet, leaving a small half-inch border along one long edge.
  5. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce. Distribute the mini pepperoni slices over the cheese layer. Sprinkle lightly with Italian seasoning.
  6. Starting from the long edge opposite the clean border, tightly roll up the pastry into a log. Press the final edge gently to seal the roll.
  7. Wrap each log tightly in plastic wrap and place it in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes. This step makes slicing much easier.
  8. Remove the chilled logs from the freezer. Using a sharp knife, slice each log into 1/2-inch thick rounds. You should get about 18 to 20 pinwheels per sheet.
  9. Place the pinwheels cut-side up on the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 1 inch between each piece. Brush the tops lightly with any remaining egg wash.
  10. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed, and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Let the cheesy pizza bites cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving warm. These are great freezer friendly appetizers; cool completely, then freeze in an airtight container. Reheat in the oven when ready to serve.

Notes

  • For a different base, you can substitute crescent roll dough or large tortillas for the puff pastry.
  • If you do not have mini pepperoni, you can chop regular pepperoni slices.
  • Serve these simple savory roll ups with extra marinara or ranch dressing for dipping.
  • If you are making these ahead for a party, you can assemble the rolls, slice them, and freeze them unbaked on a tray. Bake directly from frozen, adding 3 to 5 minutes to the baking time.
