Bring the bold, flavorful heart of Louisiana to your kitchen with this quick and easy Shrimp Creole recipe. This one-pot dish is ready in about 30 minutes and captures that classic New Orleans style.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 teaspoon Creole seasoning (or Cajun seasoning)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and celery. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until the vegetables soften.
  2. Add the minced garlic to the pot and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), chicken broth, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, Creole seasoning, oregano, and thyme. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the sauce simmer for 15 minutes to let the flavors combine. This builds the rich Creole tomato sauce base.
  5. Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the simmering sauce. Stir gently to coat.
  6. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the shrimp are pink and cooked through. Avoid overcooking the shrimp.
  7. Taste the sauce and adjust salt, pepper, and hot sauce as needed.
  8. Serve your flavorful Shrimp Creole immediately over fluffy white rice for a complete Southern seafood dinner.

Notes

  • For an even bolder flavor, add 1/2 cup of sliced Andouille sausage when you sauté the vegetables.
  • If you like a thicker sauce, you can create a simple roux before adding the vegetables, or simmer the sauce uncovered for an extra 5 minutes before adding the shrimp.
  • This recipe is great for meal prepping; the flavors deepen overnight.
