Ditch the store-bought bottles! Make your own incredible homemade BBQ sauce in minutes. This recipe delivers the perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavor, ideal for grilling meats or as a dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, water, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard in a medium saucepan.
  2. Whisk in the smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce gently simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
  5. Remove the sauce from the heat. It will thicken more as it cools.
  6. Transfer the homemade BBQ sauce to an airtight container.
  7. Cool completely before using as a glaze, marinade, or dipping sauce for your next grilling session.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper with the other spices.
  • If you prefer a sweeter BBQ sauce recipe, increase the brown sugar by 1 tablespoon.
  • This sauce tastes even better the next day after the flavors have fully developed.
  • You can easily adapt this recipe to create a tangy Carolina BBQ Sauce by increasing the apple cider vinegar to 3/4 cup and reducing the brown sugar slightly.
