You can make these incredibly soft and buttery dinner rolls in about one hour using simple ingredients. These fluffy yeast rolls stay amazing warm with butter spread on top and are perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • For topping: 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let this mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy. This shows the yeast is active.
  2. Stir the melted butter and egg into the yeast mixture.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 3 cups of the flour and the salt.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes, adding the remaining 1/2 cup of flour as needed until the dough is smooth and elastic. It should be soft but not sticky.
  6. Lightly grease a large bowl with oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel.
  7. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 45 minutes, or until it has doubled in size. This quick rise gets your homemade rolls ready fast.
  8. Gently punch down the risen dough. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  9. Arrange the dough balls in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan, leaving a little space between them for them to expand.
  10. Cover the pan loosely and let the rolls rest for a second rise for 15 minutes while you preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  12. Immediately brush the tops of the hot rolls generously with the 4 tablespoons of melted butter.
  13. Serve your soft dinner rolls warm. These are the best dinner rolls you will make!

Notes

  • For cheesy garlic rolls, mix 2 tablespoons of melted butter with 1 teaspoon of garlic powder and 1/4 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese. Brush this mixture over the rolls immediately after they come out of the oven instead of plain butter.
  • If you want to make these copycat Texas Roadhouse rolls, serve them with a side of honey butter.
  • You can make this dough by hand or use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for easier mixing.
