- 2 lbs russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp butter, for greasing
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
- Layer half the potato slices in the dish. Sprinkle with half the garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
- Pour half the cream over the potatoes and top with half the cheese mixture.
- Repeat with remaining potatoes, seasonings, cream, and cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use a mandoline for even potato slices.
- Swap Gruyère for Swiss or more Cheddar if preferred.
- Make ahead: Assemble, refrigerate, and bake before serving.
