Classic Au Gratin Potatoes

A creamy, cheesy potato side dish perfect for holidays and special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp butter, for greasing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Layer half the potato slices in the dish. Sprinkle with half the garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  3. Pour half the cream over the potatoes and top with half the cheese mixture.
  4. Repeat with remaining potatoes, seasonings, cream, and cheese.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  6. Let rest 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline for even potato slices.
  • Swap Gruyère for Swiss or more Cheddar if preferred.
  • Make ahead: Assemble, refrigerate, and bake before serving.
