Make the famous restaurant-style chicken lettuce wraps at home! This copycat recipe delivers that iconic, savory hoisin flavor with tender ground chicken and crisp vegetables, all ready in under 30 minutes. It is a perfect low-carb dinner or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 4 ounces mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup water chestnuts, drained and chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • 1/4 cup chopped peanuts (optional, for garnish)
  • 1 head butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce, leaves separated

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the ground chicken to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until it is fully browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Add the chopped mushrooms and water chestnuts to the skillet. Cook for 3 minutes until the mushrooms soften slightly.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, black pepper, and 1/4 cup water to create the savory sauce.
  6. Pour the sauce mixture over the chicken and vegetables. Stir well to coat everything evenly. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in half of the sliced green onions.
  8. Arrange the lettuce leaves on a platter. Spoon the warm chicken mixture into the center of each lettuce cup.
  9. Garnish with the remaining green onions and chopped peanuts, if using. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For the best texture, use butter lettuce or crisp iceberg lettuce cups. Wash and dry the leaves thoroughly before serving.
  • This recipe is naturally low-carb and fits well into Keto or Paleo eating plans if you check your hoisin sauce ingredients.
  • If you want a little heat, add 1/2 teaspoon of sriracha to the sauce mixture.
