A gourmet grilled cheese sandwich with deeply caramelized onions, melty Gruyere, and optional fruity jam on sourdough bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tbsp blackberry jam (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Heat butter in a pan over medium-low heat. Add onions and cook slowly for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Sprinkle sugar and balsamic vinegar over onions. Cook for another 10 minutes until deeply caramelized.
  3. Spread jam on two bread slices if using. Layer cheese and caramelized onions on top.
  4. Close sandwiches and brush outsides with olive oil.
  5. Cook in a cast iron skillet over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side until golden and cheese melts.

Notes

  • Use a lid to help melt cheese faster.
  • Swap Gruyere for cheddar or Swiss if needed.
  • Pair with tomato soup for a classic combo.
