Make this creamy, tangy, and sweet Classic Buttermilk Pie. This old-fashioned recipe is easy to prepare and results in a dessert that melts in your mouth, perfect for holidays or any family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked flaky pie crust
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place your unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, and salt until combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until the batter is uniform. Do not overmix.
  5. Pour the buttermilk filling into the unbaked pie crust.
  6. If desired, sprinkle a small pinch of nutmeg over the top of the filling.
  7. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes. The pie is done when the edges are set and slightly puffed, and the center has only a slight jiggle when gently shaken.
  8. Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before slicing. This allows the creamy custard to set properly.
  9. Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled.

Notes

  • This pie uses pantry staples, making it a great no-fuss pie recipe for last-minute baking.
  • For the best flavor, use full-fat buttermilk.
  • If you want a richer color, you can brown the butter slightly before melting it completely.
  • This recipe is a wonderful example of Southern comfort food dessert.
