Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 cup water (for sauce)
  • 1/2 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 1/2 cup dill pickle slices
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 6 sesame seed hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Make the Copycat Special Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish, 1 tablespoon yellow mustard, 1 teaspoon white vinegar, and paprika. Add 1/4 cup water and mix until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Brown the Beef: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef, chopped onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Cook, breaking up the meat, until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Simmer the Mixture: Stir in the ketchup, 2 tablespoons yellow mustard, 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, and 1/4 cup water into the beef mixture. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly. This is your Cheeseburger Sloppy Joes base.
  4. Toast the Buns: Lightly toast the sesame seed hamburger buns if desired.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Place a slice of American cheese on the bottom half of each bun and let it melt slightly from the heat of the meat. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture over the cheese.
  6. Top the Joes: Top the meat with shredded lettuce, a few dill pickle slices, and then place the top bun on. Serve this Messy Dinner Recipe immediately.
